Unblur an Image Online Free — After You Diagnose Which Blur It Is
Published October 13, 2026 · 8 min read
Every “unblur my photo” tool promises the same thing and delivers wildly different results, because the word blur covers at least four separate defects with four separate remedies. One of them — the one that is actually most common in downloaded, screenshotted and messaged images — a free AI upscaler genuinely fixes. The others it cannot, and knowing which you have before you upload anything saves an hour of disappointment.
Four defects that all look like blur
| Defect | What it looks like at 100% | Can an upscaler fix it? |
|---|---|---|
| Low resolution / heavy downscaling | Edges are stair-stepped, text is blocky, fine texture is simply absent | Yes — this is the one it is for |
| Compression artefacts | Mosquito noise around edges, 8×8 blockiness, smeared fabric | Partially; texture is destroyed but structure survives |
| Motion blur | Streaking in one direction; the subject is displaced relative to the background | No — the detail was never recorded |
| Missed focus / shallow depth of field | A smooth gradient of softness, bokeh in the background | No — and background blur is usually intentional |
Diagnose before doing anything. Zoom to 100% and look at one hard edge — a doorway, a text baseline, a fence wire. Stair-steps and missing texture mean resolution. Directional smearing means motion. A smooth, even softness means focus, and no software recovers light that never landed on the sensor.
What an AI upscaler actually does
ImageUpscaler runs Real-ESRGAN, an open-source super-resolution network, on your own device. The distinction from conventional resampling is the whole point: bilinear and bicubic interpolation invent nothing — they estimate intermediate pixels from the ones you have, which is why enlarged photos look soft. A trained model instead predicts what texture should be there, so fabric regains weave and edges regain a crisp transition.
Predicting is not recovering. The network produces plausible detail, not the original detail — which is fine for a texture and dangerous for a face or a letterform. That is why upscaling is not a substitute for a better source file, and why identity documents and legal evidence should never be upscaled.
The workflow that gets the best result
- Start from the largest, least-compressed copy you can get. A screenshot is a worse starting point than the original JPG; a messaging-app copy is worse than both. Nothing downstream repairs a bad input.
- Load it — PNG, JPG or WebP up to 25 MB. The first run downloads a model of about 32 MB and caches it; later images start immediately, and nothing is uploaded at any point.
- Upscale at 4×. The tool rebuilds the image at four times the width and height — sixteen times the pixels — in overlapping tiles so a big photo stays within browser memory.
- Drag the comparison slider and inspect at 100%. Look at eyes, text, hair and any pattern with structure. That is where invented detail shows.
- Export PNG, then downscale to the size you actually need in an editor. The extra resolution after downscaling is what makes the result look sharp rather than crunchy.
Two finishing moves that matter more than the model
Downscale after upscaling. A 4× result shown at 100% has a synthetic crispness; shrink it back towards the size you will display it at and the artefacts disappear while the sharpness stays. This is the single highest-leverage step, and it is free.
Unsharp mask last, and gently. Classic sharpening is an edge-contrast boost, not new information — which is exactly why it is worth 10% strength after upscaling and useless at 80% before. Over-sharpened edges halo, and halos read as “filtered” at a glance.
What to do about the blurs AI cannot fix
- Motion blur: deconvolution tools exist and occasionally help when the shake is small and the direction is clean. Expect partial improvement, not recovery, and expect fabric and hair to go waxy.
- Missed focus on the subject: accept it, or replace the photo. Slight sharpening improves the impression of focus, which is often enough for a screen.
- Background blur: not a defect. If you want it removed, you want a smaller aperture, not software.
- Old prints and faces: general super-resolution is the wrong tool for a soft face — face-restoration models exist for that, such as GFPGAN and CodeFormer. See the old photo pipeline for how the steps order.

Frequently asked questions
Can I unblur an image online for free?
If the softness comes from low resolution or heavy compression, yes: a super-resolution model can rebuild plausible texture at no cost and, with an on-device tool, without an account or an upload. If the blur is motion or missed focus, the detail was never captured and no tool returns it.
Does AI upscaling invent detail that was not in the photo?
Yes, and that is the mechanism. Real-ESRGAN predicts texture consistent with what it has learned, which is why fabric and edges look so much better and why a face can come back subtly wrong. Never use an upscaled image as evidence of anything.
Why does my upscaled photo look crunchy?
Usually because it is being viewed at 100% at the enlarged size. Downscale the result towards the size you actually display at and the artefacts vanish. If it still looks hard, reduce or drop the extra sharpening — the model already did it.
How big a file can I process?
ImageUpscaler takes PNG, JPG or WebP up to 25 MB, and processes large images in overlapping tiles so memory stays bounded. Above a few megapixels the input is reduced before upscaling, so a 12 MP phone photo will not come out at 48×36 megapixels.
Is it safe to upscale a photo online?
With an on-device tool there is no upload to be unsafe about: the file is decoded, processed and exported in your browser, and only the 32 MB model is downloaded, once. Cloud enhancers take the image away from you, so read their retention terms.
